Judge orders release of Ghislaine Maxwell transcripts

judge-orders-release-of-ghislaine-maxwell-transcripts

By Associated Press | October 20, 2020 at 1:53 PM EDT – Updated October 21 at 1:40 AM

NEW YORK (AP) — Transcripts of interviews lawyers conducted with the ex-girlfriend of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein must be released by Thursday morning, a judge said Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska’s order allows the public release of transcripts of two days of depositions in 2016 of British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell and related documents, along with the deposition transcript of an anonymous accuser.

The judge briefly permitted the immediate release of the transcripts but reversed herself after an attorney for Maxwell made a late plea to delay the release. The lawyer cited objections to some redactions and said Maxwell had not had decided whether to further appeal an appellate ruling. Preska gave lawyers on each side until 9 a.m. Thursday to confer and release the transcripts.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan had ruled Monday that Preska properly decided that the public had a right to access documents from legal proceedings and that transcripts should be unsealed because arguments by Maxwell’s lawyers were meritless.

The depositions were taken as part of a lawsuit brought against Maxwell by Virginia Roberts Giuffre. Giuffre had accused Maxwell of aiding Epstein in the abuse of Giuffre before she was an adult. The lawsuit was eventually settled.

Lawyers for Maxwell, 58, had argued that the documents reflecting seven hours of interviews over two days should remain sealed, in part to protect her right to a fair trial in July on charges that she helped Epstein traffic and sexually abuse teenage girls in the 1990s.

They noted that portions of the transcripts relate to perjury charges in the indictment she faces. She has pleaded not guilty.

Maxwell has been incarcerated since her arrest in early July. If convicted, she could face up to 35 years in prison.

Meanwhile, prosecutors filed papers late Tuesday to insist that 40 pages of materials and 40 pictures related to women abused by Epstein after the period addressed in the indictment should not be released to defense lawyers until eight weeks before trial.

“The premature revelation of this information would give the defendant the opportunity to interfere with the Government’s investigation before it is complete. Such information could allow her to contact and intimidate witnesses, destroy evidence relevant to the investigation, or alert other targets of the investigation,” prosecutors wrote.

Maxwell’s lawyers have argued that the materials could be important to her defense and should be turned over sooner.

But prosecutors said showing the Maxwell was not part of the abuse of some women could not be used to argue she did not join the abuse of minors from 1994 to 1997.

“The Government has not charged Maxwell with being Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘madam’ and ‘principal facilitator of his abuse,’” they wrote.

Maxwell’s arrest came a year after Epstein, 66, was arrested and charged with sex trafficking. He killed himself in August 2019 at a federal jail in Manhattan where he was awaiting trial without bail.

In 2008 in Florida, Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges of soliciting and procuring a person under age 18 for prostitution. He spent 13 months in jail, paid settlements to victims and remained a registered sex offender.

MACON, Ga. (WALB) – A defendant arrested during “Operation End Game,” a multi-agency effort targeting and arresting adult perpetrators in the Athens-area seeking sex with children, was sentenced to prison Wednesday, said Charles “Charlie” Peeler, the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia.

U.S. District Judge C. Ashley Royal sentenced John Wesley Ambrose, 36, from Watkinsville, to 46 months in prison, to be followed by ten years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to one count of use of facilities in interstate and foreign commerce to transmit information about a minor.

Following his prison term, Ambrose will have to register as a sex offender. There is no parole in the federal system.

“We will prosecute those caught seeking to sexually exploit and abuse children to the fullest extent of the law,” said U.S. Attorney Charlie Peeler. “We are fortunate in Georgia to have a strong law enforcement network tracking down online predators and bringing them into custody. I want to thank our partner agencies for their work in Operation End Game.”

“Operation End Game” was a three-day proactive effort centered in Athens, in July 2019 to arrest adults communicating with children on-line and then traveling to meet them for the purpose of having sex. The cases were investigated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia, the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit (CEACC), the Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD), the FBI and the Athens-Clarke County District Attorney’s Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lyndie Freeman is prosecuting the case for the Government.

ATLANTA, Ga. (WTOC) – Twenty-six missing children were rescued during a two-week operation in Atlanta and Macon, Ga. during the month of August.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, 26 children were rescued, 13 children were located, and nine suspects were arrested.

The U.S. Marshals Service Missing Child Unit, in conjunction with the agency’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and Georgia state and local agencies, led “Operation Not Forgotten” to rescue endangered missing children.

Additionally, investigators cleared 26 arrest warrants and filed additional charges for alleged crimes related to sex trafficking, parental kidnapping, registered sex offender violations, drugs and weapons possession, and custodial interference.

“The U.S. Marshals Service is fully committed to assisting federal, state, and local agencies with locating and recovering endangered missing children, in addition to their primary fugitive apprehension mission,” said Director of the Marshals Service Donald Washington. “The message to missing children and their families is that we will never stop looking for you.”

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, these missing children were considered to be some of the most at-risk and challenging recovery cases in the area, based on indications of high-risk factors such as victimization of child sex trafficking, child exploitation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and medical or mental health conditions. Other children were located at the request of law enforcement to ensure their well-being.

Dougherty Co. D.A. won’t put up with anyone disrupting virtual learning

By Jim Wallace | August 22, 2020 at 2:24 AM EDT – Updated August 22 at 2:24 AM

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Greg Edwards, the district attorney for the Dougherty Judicial Circuit, is sending out a warning to both students and adults.

Anyone trying to disrupt Dougherty County Schools’ virtual classes will be prosecuted.

Edwards said that some people think it’s funny to try to interfere with virtual school classes that are now going on.

One student has exposed himself to the virtual class while one student’s parents threatened a teacher during class.

Those are being investigated by Dougherty School police.

The D.A. said that will end now. He said he will prosecute disruptions, even when the classes are being held online.

“Virtual school is just like real school,” said Edwards. “And it is my intention to deal with any issues that arise from this situation, just as if you walked into the live classroom and did these things, you are going to be dealt with the same way.”

Edwards said this is not just a problem in Dougherty County but across the state.

Several students have streamed pornography to their classmates, which can result in some very harsh penalties. Even being charged as a sex offender.

Edwards said parents especially, should treat virtual school just like a regular school class.

The operation took place between July 17-Aug. 11.

Ryan Sidney Huff (Source: Coffee County Sheriff’s Office)

DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) – An Enigma man was arrested Thursday on numerous sexual offenses after an investigation into numerous incidents in Ambrose and Broxton, according to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office.

Ryan Sidney Huff, 29, was charged with four counts of sexual exploitation of children and five counts of public indecency. The sheriff’s office said the charges stem from an investigation into “multiple allegations of indecent exposure in both the Ambrose and Broxton communities.”

“Victims reported that a male subject was involved in a lewd act with himself in public and exposed himself to both children and adults,” the sheriff’s office said. “A preliminary investigation conducted by the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office revealed Huff knowingly exposed himself in a lewd manner to children and adults on multiple occasions.”

Huff was arrested for similar acts in other counties prior to these, according to law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office said Huff is on felony probation for statutory rape, which was violated in November 2014 for failing to attend sex offender treatment.
